Five things you can do this quarter. They stack: the same brand mention inside a Reddit thread can also end up in a "best of" list, a Quora answer, and a Bing-indexed page. Run them in parallel.

Tactic 1: Get included in "best of" lists

Tactic 2: Seed Reddit and Quora mentions

Reddit and Quora carry disproportionate weight because they're public, threaded, and structured around the same questions buyers ask. Both platforms are crawled, indexed, and trained on.

What to do:

Map the questions your buyers actually ask. Use the Reddit search bar and "site:quora.com [keyword]" in Google. List the threads where your category comes up.
Answer each one with substance. Lead with the helpful information. Mention your brand only when it's the right answer to the question. If you're affiliated, say so on the first reference. Disclosure does not hurt your placement, dishonesty does.
Help good threads stay visible. Aged accounts with real history can upvote and reply without tripping anti-spam filters. The goal is to keep the answer in the top of the thread, not to fake the conversation.

Tactic 3: Build topical authority

One thread is a data point. Twelve threads across different communities is a pattern. Pattern consistency is what assistants reward.

What to do:

Pick three to five subreddits and one or two Quora topics where your category is actively discussed. Show up there every week, not every quarter.
Write one piece of original research a month and post it where the audience already gathers. Original data gets cited. Recycled blog posts get ignored.
Spread mentions across platforms instead of stacking them in one spot. Reddit, Quora, Hacker News, Indie Hackers, niche Discord-to-blog crossposts. Assistants weight diversity of sources.

Tactic 4: Encourage user-generated content

The most credible mention is the one you didn't write. Make it easy for satisfied customers to share their experience.

What to do:

When a customer tells you the product solved their problem, ask them to write a short Reddit comment or Quora answer about it. Send them the thread, send them a one-line prompt. Make the ask specific.
Add a "share your story" prompt inside your product, with a link to the relevant thread. Friction kills follow-through.

Tactic 5: Be findable in live web search

ChatGPT Search and Perplexity pull from live web results. Google's AI Overviews use the same index Google itself ranks. If your owned content is missing from regular search, it's missing from assistant retrieval too.

What to do:

Publish answer-shaped content on your own site. Question as the H1, short direct answer in the first paragraph, supporting detail below. This is the format AI Overviews summarize.
Make sure your pages render to plain HTML for crawlers. Heavy JS-only pages lose retrieval weight.
Get inbound links from the editorial sites in your space. Standard SEO link equity still routes through to AI retrieval rankings.

AI Overviews show up on a meaningful share of Google queries. The first "answer" buyers see is often synthesized, not a list of links.
ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity all retrieve live web pages alongside their training data. Trained-in references take longer to update, but live retrieval picks up fresh content within days.
Reddit and Quora are weighted heavily in both layers. Google's $60M Reddit deal was about training data, but the same threads also rank in AI Overviews and Perplexity citations.
Brands without footprint in these places get fewer cites than brands with one. The work compounds, so the brands that started two years ago are easier to find than brands starting today. The brands starting today will have the same advantage in two years.

Common Mistakes

Treating it like a one-time campaign

A single burst of mentions doesn't move the needle. Assistants weight pattern consistency, not spike moments. Plan for at least two quarters of steady output before you expect the numbers to shift.

Hiding the affiliation

Pretending to be a random user when you're the founder is the fastest way to get banned, deleted, and screenshotted. Disclose. Buyers and moderators trust honest brand voices more than they trust anonymous shills, and the assistants don't penalize disclosed mentions.

Optimizing only for one platform

A strong Reddit footprint with no Quora presence cuts you out of an entire layer of training data. So does the reverse. The brands with the highest assistant citation rates are present on both, plus an editorial footprint somewhere on the open web.

Skipping measurement

If you don't query the assistants directly every month, you don't know whether the work is moving. The query is free. Run it. Track which brands show up, in what order, and with what context. That's your scoreboard.

What to Do Today

Audit your assistant footprint. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity the top five questions your buyers would ask about your category. Write down which brands they mention, in what order, and whether you appear at all.
Audit your Reddit and Quora footprint. Search your brand name plus "reddit" and "quora" on Google. Note the top five threads. Read them. They are what assistants will see too.
Identify the high-value conversations to join. Make a list of 15 to 20 threads where your category is discussed. These are your starting points.
Publish, don't pitch. Add real value first, mention your brand only when it's the right answer, and disclose when you're affiliated.
Plan for two quarters minimum. Set a calendar reminder for 90 days from today. Re-run the assistant audit. Compare.

The Bottom Line
